The Benefits of Corrugated Paper Packaging
The list of packaging materials to choose from is almost infinite, but for most of us, our resources are not. We’ve talked about the many variables that come into play in this decision-making process, but if we had to choose ONE favorite, we’d choose paper—corrugated paper, to be precise.
There are many reasons why we’re fans of paper packaging, but especially right now, this is our go-to. The US and China are the two biggest producers of paper in the world, which means that even though many supply chains are off-kilter, paper should remain a relatively reliable resource.
In a very large way, big retailers like Amazon also go for corrugated boxes, recognizing that it’s not only a lightweight and durable layer of protection, but also the most sustainable form of packaging available.
Why we love paper packaging so much
Corrugated paper is one of the most flexible options on the market. It can be folded into all sorts of shapes and sizes, the thickness can vary, and it can be covered in a variety of coatings, including flame retardant. Because it’s incredibly customizable, you can ensure your packaging is right-sized, meaning it’s the smallest and lightest possible to maximize your resources.
Standard shipping boxes that you see at USPS, for example, often force you into larger boxes than are necessary. Not only are you paying more in shipping, but now you also have to purchase something to fill the empty space inside.
Corrugated paper is also extremely durable. It’s made of three layers: two flat outer layers with a rippled inner layer - called the medium. Basically, cardboard reinforced cardboard, but…with strategy.
Another massive benefit to choosing paper shipping products is sustainability! Many producers of corrugated paper utilize locally-sourced recycled paper or purchase pulp from environmentally-friendly vendors. While we’re at it, paper-based packaging materials are also recyclable (possibly even being reused in the next round of cardboard), and if they do end up in a landfill, they’re biodegradable.
The benefits choosing ethically-sourced paper products has on the environment cannot be stressed enough!
Last but not least, we all know that the dollar signs are often what leadership cares most about. Luckily, corrugated paper is often less expensive than alternatives. We explained how right-sizing helps you minimize materials above, and with streamlined and lightweight packaging, you’ll spend even less on shipping. And because paper packaging can be folded flat and easily stacked, you’ll save precious space in your warehouse. Finally, paper is an ideal surface on which to print your eye-catching designs. No additional layers or special coatings are required.
It’s often pointed out to us that styrofoam can be cheaper than paper, which is sometimes true. However, the mold used to shape your styrofoam is very expensive and cannot be altered. If you update your product or packaging, you’ll have to buy a whole new mold, which can take months and make a sizable dent in your budget.
Getting Creative
Here at Lawrence Paper Co, we love getting creative with corrugated paper packaging. Our clients are often surprised at the unusual ideas we’re willing to entertain, resulting in unique and effective solutions.
For example, one of our clients makes all sorts of pumps, and before coming to us, they used foam-in-place to fill the open spaces in their packaging. This solution is expensive, messy, and requires more time for the molds to “set.” It was a clunky and expensive process overall. We designed end-caps made from corrugated cardboard to hold the pumps in place, within their shipping containers. It was just as effective but simpler and cheaper at almost every stage!
